St. John A.M.E. Church, Roanoke, VA was established as a Circuit in which it shared a pastor with Bethel A.M.E. Church of Cave Spring, Virginia.  Church service was held at Bethel A.M.E. Church on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month and at St. John A.M.E. on the second and fourth Sunday each month.  There were approximately 38 or more Pastors to serve the Circuit Churches which continued until 1986.

In 1986, members of St. John A.M.E. petitioned Bishop John Hurst Adams to grant permission for St. John A.M.E. to break from a circuit church and become a stationed church with a full-time pastor and regular worship service every Sunday instead of twice a month.  The request was granted in May 1986.

Without sacrifice, hard work and dedication from our members, we would not be existing today.  To God be the Glory; working together we can make a difference.
